Hotels near Wat Pho, Bangkok

The Reclining Golden Buddha at Wat Pho

Continuing our series of hotels hotels near famous Bangkok landmarks and tourists attractions, I bring you 20 hotels near Wat Pho, the home of the giant golden reclining Buddha, perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in Bangkok, if not all of Thailand.

The area around Wat Pho is very convenient to a number of other temples that are popular on the sight seeing circuit. The Grand Palace is also very close, making this area an ideal launching pad for a day or two of Bangkok’s must see destinations.

Being close to the famous Khaosan Road, there are a large number of cheap and very cheap hotels, of varying quality. You can stay overnight in this area for as little as USD14 a night, but don’t forget that old adage that you get what you pay for.  Some of these places are definitely aimed at backpackers and the adventurous. Not much here for the “flashpacker” crowd, although one or two may fit the bill.

With public transportation being so cheap in Thailand, I personally wouldn’t stay in the area if all I wanted to do was see Wat Pho, The Grand Temple and other nearby attractions. A taxi from more popular areas of Bangkok won’t cost you very much at all.

One piece of advice though. The Tuk Tuk drivers in this area are more, …”aggresive” in their pursuit of the Baht, and are less reliable than tuk tuk drivers in other parts of Bangkok. Unless you really know what you are doing, I would save the Tuk Tuk ride for when you are in another part of the city. Take a taxi to and from this area, it will save you more than just time and sweat.

Cultural Dos and Don’ts in Thailand

Elephants in Chiang Mai

Thailand cultural Dos and Don’ts: Don’t get caught out being an ass while you are holidaying in Thailand.

While you are having fun in Thailand, please remember that there are a lot of social taboos that you may not know about that could easily cause you to offend your hosts. Some could even land you in jail!!

One of the most important things to remember while you are in Thailand is that respect for the monarchy is of utmost importance. NEVER say anything that could be remotely construed as critical of any member of the Royal Family. Doing so would not only deeply offend every Thai person with earshot, but could be dangerous to your personal safety and could get you jailed under Thailand’s Lese Majeste laws. The law, expressed in Article 112 of the Criminal Code, states, “Whoever defames, insults or threatens the King, Queen, the Heir-apparent or the Regent, shall be punished (with) imprisonment of three to fifteen years.”
