On the pool level of the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, if you take a walk along the path that leads to some of the I.SAWAN villas, you will come across this little fellow just before you enter the fitness facilities. Well, he isn’t really little, he is quite large, and he is the star of the February desktop calendar wallpaper.

Elephants are a common theme at the Erawan, as the hotel takes it’s name from the Erawan Shrine on the corner, one of Bangkok’s Hindu shrines. According to Wikipedia, the shrine was built in 1956 as part of the government-owned Erawan Hotel to eliminate the bad karma believed caused by laying the foundations on the wrong date.

The Erawan shrine is quite a popular attraction is is crowed from morning to night, every day.

It is a couple of days late this month but here the desktop calendar wallpaper for January 2012.

This photo was taken in Ayuthaya at the Great Chedi Chaya Mongkhol, which was built by the command of King Naresuan the Great, to commemorate his decisive victory over the Burmese invasion in A.D. 1592. The battle climaxed in a momentous elephant battle between the King and the Burmese crown prince Maha Uparaja, in the province of Suparnburi. The renown of King Naresuan after this battle was such that there were no more outside invasions for the following 200 years.

Last month I mentioned that sometimes I use my own images for these calendars, and sometimes I purchase stock images. Well this month I’m happy to say that again this month I am using an image that I took myself.

This photo was taken last New Year’s Eve from the balcony of the Lebua at State Tower, one of the hotels featured in The Hangover 2 earlier this year. There are plenty of other hotels which offer fantastic vantage points from which to view the NYE fireworks, many of which I will write about in a post next Monday. So if you will be in Bangkok on December 31st and want to know where the best views are, check back next Monday.

Each month when I make these Thailand themed desktop wallpaper calendars, I either purchase an image to use as the base, or I use one that I have taken myself. Unfortunately (for my wallet) I’m not that great of a photographer and more often than not I end up buying images. This month however I am using a photo that I took myself earlier this year when I stayed at the beautiful Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok.

Each room has a beautifully painted silk panel and this photo is of the panel in our room. You can see more photos of Siam Kempinski on my Flickr stream, or plenty of even better ones at my friend Jordy’s Flickr stream.
