No Vacancy

Do some hotels in Thailand discriminate against guests based on their nationality?

While browsing through a number of third party hotel reservation booking sites, I occasionally come across hotels that have a notice regarding a restriction on the nationalities of guests who can book through their site.

For example on Agoda, I sometimes see things like this:

NoticePlease note that this hotel operates exclusive contracts with other vendors to service specific markets and thus these rates do not apply to nationals of Cyprus, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Looking at the list of countries, I could not help but become suspicious.  Could it be that the hotel simply doesn’t want guests from this region of the world in their hotel?

February 2012 desktop calendar wallpaper

Choose your desktop calendar wallpaper size

On the pool level of the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, if you take a walk along the path that leads to some of the I.SAWAN villas, you will come across this little fellow just before you enter the fitness facilities. Well, he isn’t really little, he is quite large, and he is the star of the February desktop calendar wallpaper.

Elephants are a common theme at the Erawan, as the hotel takes it’s name from the Erawan Shrine on the corner, one of Bangkok’s Hindu shrines. According to Wikipedia, the shrine was built in 1956 as part of the government-owned Erawan Hotel to eliminate the bad karma believed caused by laying the foundations on the wrong date.

The Erawan shrine is quite a popular attraction is is crowed from morning to night, every day.

Download the size that fits your desktop and have a beautiful desktop calendar all month long. Check back towards the end of next month and every month for new ones. If there is a size that you would like me to make it in, please leave a comment below requesting it. I might even make up an iPhone version if anybody ask for it.

If you like this and other Thailand themed desktop wallpaper calendars that I have made, please take the 2 seconds it takes to use the buttons at the top or bottom of this post to Tweet it or like it on Facebook. I would greatly appreciate it.

View of the pool and the river from the balcony at Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa

In November 2011 Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa was re-branded to Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort. Ownership has not changed, the property is still owned by the Minor Hotel Group. The rebranding is to bring the riverside resort in line to fit in with some of the company’s existing boutique properties, such as the Anantara Phuket Resort, or the Four Seasons Bangkok and Four Seasons Chiang Mai. I am re-posting a review I wrote of the property a little while back, as most of the details will remain unchanged.

On “the other side” of the Chao Phraya River, a short boat ride away you will find the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort. While it is located only 10 or 15 minutes from the heart of Bangkok, it feels like it is a world away with a true resort feeling.
