In this review I cover price comparisons with other popular hotel reservation sites for hotels in Thailand, as well as their unique Agoda Rewards program, in which you accrue points which you can redeem for discounts on future bookings. I also look at their customer service, including their cancellation policy and finally I take a look at an area where I think they could improve.

Private pool villas, a growing trend in Thailand and in popular resort spots around the world seem to be popping up at an increasing pace. If you are looking for the ultimate in privacy and pampering, private pool villas could be just what you are looking for.

If you have ever had the unpleasant experience of having to deal with other guests at a resort who get up at dawn, go down to the pool and “reserve” their place by placing a towel and book on a poolside recliner, only to leave it there unattended for 4 or 5 hours so they can come back to claim their spot in the middle of the day, you would certainly appreciate having your own private pool.

Families might also appreciate having their own private pool where they can easily keep an eye on their children in their own personal space.

Sala Phuket Resort & Spa

Sala Phuket Resort & Spa is located on Mai Khao beach on the Northwestern tip of Phuket, which is home to a lot of upscale luxury resorts and an area which is mostly overlooked by many of the tourists who visit the island. The secluded location gives an added dimension of privacy on top of that already afforded by having your own villa with personal pool.

Sala Phuket and Spa is a fairly new resort and was featured in the Condé Nast 2008 Hot List.

63 of the 79 villas at Sala Phuket come with a private pool. The private pools at each villa here are not the all-too-often seen “plunge pools” that are being passed off as pools at some resorts. The management of Sala Phuket claim that they are among the largest guest room swimming pools not only in Thailand, but throughout the world! That is a tall claim considering just some of the competition showcased in this list alone.

Villa sizes are certainly quite large though, ranging from 157 square meters of living space (plus pool) up to a massive 619 square meters.

Aleenta Resort & Spa, Cha Am

I’ve had my eye on Aleenta for a while now. It’s been on my “must stay” list since at least 2007. One of the first in the growing industry of boutique resorts in and around the sleepy town of Cha Am, 2 hours south of Bangkok, the Aleenta features bungalow style buildings with thatched roofs and gleaming white walls. The style of the buildings and the layout of the resort brings to my mind images of a Mexican or Mediterranean village by the sea.

Aleenta has been divided into two sections, with a child-friendly section called the Frangipani Wing and a larger adults-only section. Rooms have iPods with playlists pre-installed as well as a stereo with an iPod dock, so you can chill out to the mellow tunes chosen by the staff, or listen to your own iPod if you prefer.

Picture yourself drink in hand, looking out over the ocean from your own private pool like the one pictured above. The coast of Hua Hin and Cha Am face east into the Gulf of Thailand, so unfortunately there will be no watching the sunset over the ocean from your pool or deck, but that doesn’t take much away from your own private view.

If you can drag yourself out of bed in time one morning while staying here, try to catch a sunrise over the ocean, on a clear morning they are truly spectacular.

Six Senses Hideaway, Samui

Did somebody ask for space? How about 20 acres of tropical vegetation with incredible sweeping views of the surrounding beaches and islands in the Gulf of Siam?

Six Senses Hideaway (formerly Sila Evason Hideaway & Spa) has won many awards over the past 5 years including making the lists of best hotels compiled by Condé Nast, Tatler and is a Grand Award winner of  the Andrew Harper Hideaway Report.

The Hideaway Villas (130 square meters) have a sunken marble bath with panoramic views of the ocean. The 41 Pool Villas (160 square meters) have bedrooms that look over the large wooden sundeck with covered sala and 2.5 meter x 5 meter pool, in turn overlooking the ocean. The 300 square meter Pool Villa Suite features a 3 meter by 5 meter pool with large wooden sundeck, two sun lounges, another sunbed built for two, a covered sala and an outdoor dining table big enough for 4 people. Of course like every villa at Six Senses the views are breathtaking.

Phulay Bay, A Ritz Carlton Reserve, Krabi

Ritz Carlton Reserve is a new brand of smaller luxury resorts by Ritz Carlton with a focus on individual service, and Phulay Bay in Krabi was the first property to open under this brand late last year.

The new Reserve brand ramps up the pampering ante with a personal dedicated butler for every one of the 54 one bedroom villas, available at your call 24 hours a day.

If you can afford to stay here, the tranquility, service, personal space and luxurious surroundings make it a once in a lifetime experience. At the time of writing this post, Agoda has a promotion upgrading any Resort Pavilion room reservations to an Ocean Pavilion room with private pool. The Ocean pavilion rate is around 250 USD higher than the Resort Pavilion, so this promotion is excellent value.

Phulay Bay, A Ritz Carlton Reserve

Veranda Resort & Spa Hua Hin

Set on 5 acres, The Veranda Resort & Spa offers both regular rooms as well as one and two bedroom villas with private pools. Not far from the above mentioned Aleenta Resort, it is located on the beach facing eastward toward the Gulf of Thailand.

The one and two bedroom pool villas are 158 square meters in size and offer a large-ish pool in a walled-in private area. However I personally prefer the slightly smaller (131 square meters) beachfront pool villas where you can literally step out of your private pool and onto the sands of the beach.

The jewels in the crown of this resort without a doubt are the two Sky Pool Villas (160 square meters), split-level duplex apartments with 2 bedrooms, steam room, large wooden sundeck and large rooftop infinity pool with sweeping views of the Gulf of Thailand.

Veranda also provides a Kid’s Club from the hours of 10am to 7pm daily, affording you the opportunity for some truly relaxing personal time to enjoy your private sanctuary.

Napasai Koh Samui

The pool of the three bedroom private pool residence at Napasai Koh Samui was so beautiful I couldn’t post just one picture. I had to show the view from both angles, showing both the living room, and the view of the ocean.

These are not mid-sized private villas as part of a resort, these are full sized private homes with separate bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, and large living and dining areas with balconies which overlook the private oceanfront pool. Choose between a one, two, three or four bedroom waterfront residence with large living areas and fully equipped kitchen. Guests also have access to guest services and spa facilities at Napasai resort.

I could just imagine having the whole family stay here for a week for an extended family vacation/re-union. A place like this would also be an excellent place to have a wedding since your friends and family can all stay together, I think it would be an excellent vibe.

http://www.napasai.com appears to have slightly better prices than Agoda at the time of writing this post, but you may like to check again as these things tend to fluctuate.

Foreign embassies in Thailand is a post from: Thai Hotels

Lose your passport? Overstay your visa? Want to get married in Thailand? Need a visa to take your sweetheart for a visit home? Get arrested? (heaven forbid!) Or maybe you just need some documents notarized.

In any of the above cases you will need to visit, or at the very least call the embassy or consulate of your home country. If you get into a spot of trouble and find that you need the services of your embassy or consul, finding the contact details at the last minute can be just another hassle.

With that in mind I have put together a list of every foreign consulate and embassy in Thailand, incorporating not just Bangkok, but Phuket, Chiang Mai and Songkhla. Pretty much every country has their embassy in Bangkok, but a number of countries also have consulates in other cities throughout Thailand.

Interestingly enough, Ireland and Venezuela do not have a diplomatic presence in Thailand. While Ireland does have a couple of “honorary consuls” in Phuket and Chiang Mai, they are very limited in the services they can provide. Consular services for both Ireland and Venezuela are handled through their respective embassies in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia.

Woodlands Suites Serviced Residences Pattaya is a post from: Thai Hotels

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of serviced apartments, with executive serviced apartments a particular favorite. I’m also no big fan of Pattaya but as I still haven’t gotten to some of the reported nicer beaches and close islands I’m not going to give up on it yet.

The 5 star rated Woodlands Suites Serviced Residences are a luxurious alternative to the hotels of Pattaya, whether you’re staying here short or long term. The 74 studios and apartments offer a fully furnished and spacious retreat that’s close to all the action in Pattaya yet far enough away to make this a peaceful and quiet accommodation choice.

The beach, for example, is only 500 meters, and the famous Walking Street is only 1 kilometer away, plus there are numerous shops, restaurants and entertainment options all close by.

The luxurious studios and apartments have some great features such as the TV with home theater system and DVD player, plus complimentary high speed wireless internet. All guest rooms come with a kitchen that has all the crockery, cutlery and glassware you should need, as well as a microwave, fridge freezer, and kettle.

The direct pool access studios are popular with guests, whether you’re here with family or friends, and for larger groups the 2 Bedroom Executive Apartments offer space and real value for money. The Woodlands Suites Serviced Residences Pattaya also have a good range of facilities and services including swimming pool, fitness center, spa, Italian restaurant, and meeting rooms.

While serviced apartments offer a lot more space and what I consider vastly greater value than regular hotels, there are some facilities and services that are not always available that you may be used to in a regular hotel. For example while there is room service available, it is not a 24 hour room service. In-room dining hours are from 6:30 am to 11pm. There is also no concierge so if you rely on one to make a lot of bookings for you, this is something you may need to consider.

The Woodlands Suites Serviced Residences are one of the newer and more luxurious properties and one of the very few serviced residences in Pattaya and makes a welcome addition to the accommodation choices in this seaside town not usually known for luxury.

Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa is a post from: Thai Hotels

The 5 star Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa is a peaceful oasis in the center of this noisy, hedonistic city and will appeal to many different guests, from couples to families to business travelers, due to its great range of facilities and services and its excellent central location.

Located in the center of Pattaya, shops, restaurants and nightlife are only steps away but then so is the beach! Guests can dine out or make use of the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa restaurants and bars. The 296 guest rooms and suites are modern and come with all the facilities you would expect from a 5 star hotel that’s part of the world-renowned Marriott chain.

The large outdoor swimming pool is at the center of the hotel and provides a calm oasis, and is one of the main attractions of the hotel. The pool is large and gets quite deep at one end, in fact it is the deepest pool that I have seen at any hotel in Thailand. Being a Marriott of course the pool is surrounded by tropical gardens, providing plenty of shade for the many sun lounge chairs, where you can relax and also enjoy some drinks and food from the nearby “Manao” poolside bar, open from 6 am to 11 pm.  Other recreational facilities include a fitness center featuring an aerobics studio with sprung floor, spa, and 2 floodlit tennis courts.

With Pattaya and it’s multitude of go-go bars being a magnet for a lot of men from all around the world, I think it’s not unreasonable to discuss whether or not a hotel in this area has a joiner fee. While the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa is decidedly NOT on the list of Pattaya girl friendly hotels, the 25 Terrace Suites located around the garden at the back of the hotel near the pool, are accessible from Beach Road via a small unobtrusive gateway manned by a security guard. This entrance bypasses the scrutiny of the lobby and allows you to go directly to your room in privacy.

Very close by guests can enjoy an 18 hole golf course and many other activities, plus of course make the most of the lively atmosphere in Pattaya. For business travelers there are 8 different size meeting rooms culminating in the ballroom that can seat 300 people and would make the ideal venue for any special occasion.

Hotels near patpong is a post from: Thai Hotels

Almost everybody who visits Bangkok Thailand checks out Patpong at least once. Love it or hate it, Patpong is one of the best known and night spots in Bangkok.

There are two main activities on offer in Patpong. The first one is the night market that is set up in the street from about 6pm until late at night. Here you can find anything that you would expect to find in a market catering to tourists in Thailand, and not a single thing here is real. Knockoffs of just about anything are available here from cheap(ish) Diesel jeans and shoes, heaps of T-shirts, watches, CDs, DVDs, handbags and belts.

Make sure you bargain because it is expected and you can get everything for a lot cheaper than originally quoted. Of course bargaining doesn’t mean being rude or pushy, as that will most likely get you nowhere.

There are two great ways to get the best price you can while bargaining at a market like Patpong. The easiest way is to bargain as low as you can and when bargaining seems to have reached a standstill and you both won’t budge, ask them one more time for your price, and when they say no, start to walk away. If there was ever any possibility of getting the price that you were asking for then the owner of the stall will come after you and submit to your offer.

The other way to get a great price, most times lower than other tourists will get takes a little work, but can turn out to be a lot more fun and rewarding. If you learn how to count from 1 to 1000 and also a couple of simple bargaining phrases in Thai, people will be so impressed that you have put the effort into learning their language that they are likely to give you a local price. Why not spend the hours on the flight over learning some phrases and numbers and you would be surprised by the reception you get.

The other attraction in Patpong of course is the go-go bars. These are on both sides of the street that the market stalls have been set up in. Which is why it’s probably not a good idea to bring the kids to this market as the will be exposed to sights they have never seen before and could drive your young son (and maybe even husband) to total distraction.

Everyone has heard the stories of ping pong shows and all the other sordid stories from Bangkok. Couples are welcome at these shows and indeed many do go, however one important piece of advice you should remember is to stay away from upstairs bars. Anything on the ground floor should be ok, but there are too many stories of people being ripped off in the upstairs bars.

There are plenty of Patpong hotels as it is located in the Silom district, which is a major hub of business and very close to Sathorn. So whether you are in Bangkok for business or pleasure, staying in Patpong will position you close to both business areas and nightlife.

Kids just wanna have fun on vacation too.

Traveling with kids in tow can a very fun and rewarding experience, but it can also be quite stressful, for both the kids and the parents. The parents want to relax and have a good time, but at the same time show the kids something new and exciting, and hopefully broaden their horizons by introducing them to new and exciting experiences. Teenagers also want to have a good time, but their idea of fun rarely involves anything to do with their parents.

But the most important thing is that no matter where you go, the children are safe and happy.

Traveling in Thailand can be fun and exotic for everyone in the family,  from riding elephants and tuks tuks, to having fun on the beautiful beaches of Phuket and enjoying some of the other many unique experiences Thailand has to offer.
