As we head towards summer in the northern hemisphere, many people’s thoughts turn to tropical getaways. Last week I presented 23 five star Phuket hotels for less than US185 during July 2012, this week we will take a look at an island which is a little less traveled, and as a result still relatively unspoilt. Yes, I’m talking about Ko Samui. This week we have 14 Five Star Samui Resorts for less than USD205 in July, including two that can be had for less than USD100 per night, with rates starting as low as USD81. These rates are a steal for Ko Samui in the middle of summer.

As usual, I searched Agoda for 4 nights in the middle of July (from Monday 16th) and have listed the five star hotels and resorts below with the cheapest hotels listed first. I have also indicated which hotels and resorts offer free wifi with the mark.

You may be wondering why I chose those particular dates. I really just chose them as random dates in the middle of the month. I didn’t want to go out and find the cheapest dates in July just so I could write a more spectacular headline. I believe these rates are fairly indicative of the average rates for five star Samui resorts in July 2012.

Where to catch Bangkok riverside hotels’ complimentary shuttle boats

Pretty much all of the Bangkok hotels along the Chao Phraya River have complimentary shuttle boats running constantly between Sathorn Pier and the respective hotels.

Many people when considering booking a hotel by the riverside wonder where Sathorn Pier is and how difficult it is to find and board the free boats.

It is very easy to get to and even accessible by the BTS Skytrain from Saphan Taksin station on the Silom line. If you are somewhere along the Sukhumvit line you will need to go to Siam station and change to the Silom line.

Please note that Praya Palazzo shuttle boat leaves from Phra Athit Pier, see below for details.

Once you get off at Saphan Taksin, take exit number 2 and keep heading straight out of the station and head towards the river along the covered pathway past the scratching and sleeping dogs. The pier is right there on the left.

All of the major riverside hotels and some smaller boutique hotels that you probably haven’t heard of pick up and drop off passengers from Sathorn Pier on a regular basis.

Bangkok riverside hotels with free shuttle boats

The Peninsula Bangkok

The Peninsula is located diagonally across from the Saphan Taksin BTS Skytrain station and offers a free shuttle boat between 6am and midnight.

The Shangri-La Bangkok

The Shangri-La doesn’t have a free shuttle boat because it is within walking distance from the pier. Take exit number 1 from the BTS Skytrain Saphan Taksin station and walk a short distance. You will see signs. The entrance to the hotel is down a small street. Look for a Chinese shrine on the corner as your landmark.

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok’s free shuttle boat operates from 7am to 11pm. Call the hotel from Sathorn pier if you don’t want to wait for it’s regular round. +66 (2) 659 9000

Millennium Hilton Bangkok

The Millennium Hilton Bangkok’s free shuttle boat makes two stops, one at River City shopping complex adjacent to the hotel and then at the Sathorn pier with direct access to the BTS Skytrain.

Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort

Anantara Bangkok Riverside resort’s free shuttle boat departs the Sathorn pier all day until midnight at 30 minute intervals.

Ramada Plaza Menam

Departs Sathorn Pier every 30 minutes from 7am to 11pm.

Chatrium Suites

Chatrium Suites is downriver towards to Anantara.

Phraya Palazzo

This boutique hotel can only be accessed by water and all check-in procedures take place at Phra Athit Pier. See map below for directions.

Protip

Apart from Praya Palazzo, the hotel shuttle boats do not require passengers to show any proof that they are staying at the hotel. You could take a free river cruise on these boats and enjoy the sights of the River of Kings even if you are not a guest.

The trip to Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort takes about 15-20 minutes and they have a marvelous riverside buffet with a huge selection of Thai and international dishes, which makes for a very pleasant night out.

Long exposure photos of the pool at Grand Hyatt Erawan, Bangkok

It has been a couple of years since I started trying to turn my three interests; Thailand, hotels and photography, into something more than just a hobby.

A couple of years ago I bought a pretty decent camera, a Nikon D90 and while I certainly don’t make any claims of being a “photographer” I think I have taken a couple of nice shots over the years (see my Flickr page of Thai hotel photos here). I also like to think that my love of beautiful hotels also shows.

But last week I had a real “Duh!” moment when I finally tried a tripod for the first time. What have I been doing all this time?!

Until now I had only really taken one nice night shot that I really like and that was of the pool at the Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa. For that shot I had rested the camera on one of the rocks surrounding the pool at about 1am.

So this trip I finally pulled my finger out and got myself a tripod. As you may know, my first stop in Bangkok is always the Grand Hyatt Erawan. So my first night I snuck down to the pool at midnight, set up the tripod and tried out some long exposure shots. The results are what you see below. Most of the shots were taken with a 15 second exposure.

What do you think? Any suggestions or advice? I will gladly accept any constructive criticism.

Do some hotels in Thailand discriminate against guests based on their nationality?

While browsing through a number of third party hotel reservation booking sites, I occasionally come across hotels that have a notice regarding a restriction on the nationalities of guests who can book through their site.

For example on Agoda, I sometimes see things like this:

Looking at the list of countries, I could not help but become suspicious.  Could it be that the hotel simply doesn’t want guests from this region of the world in their hotel?

While most of the hotels for which this policy is displayed are in the 3.5 star range, there are a few 4 and 5 star hotels.

I called a couple of these hotels and was assured that they accept guests regardless of nationality. They even proceeded to process a reservation for me while I claimed that I carried an Egyptian passport at one hotel, and a Moroccan passport at another.

I’ve also seen these types of nationality restrictions listed for Japanese and Thai nationals as well. From first hand experience, I know exactly what these two are about.

Many hotels and resorts throughout Thailand offer discounted rates to Thai nationals, and foreigners living in Thailand. This is because rates are normally geared towards foreign tourists, who for the most part, are more affluent than the locals. Showing your Thai passport or work permit will entitle you to a discount at such hotels which is not available through third party booking sites, thus the notice.

The Japanese market however, is a totally different story. In the local market, Japanese hotels charge by the guest, not by the room, basically doubling or tripling the yield per room.  With Japanese travelers accustomed to this arrangement, some travel agencies conspire with hotels overseas to basically extract twice the money per hotel room from Japanese guests.  Of course if Japanese guests rock up with a normal booking – not the jacked-up per person rate- the hotel is not going to reject the reservation.

I have come to the conclusion that such nationality restrictions are not a sign of racism by the hotel, or the reservation company.  I feel that we can take the policy at face value and believe that certain hotels have signed exclusive deals with particular travel companies in certain countries.

I also suspect, though of course I have not confirmed, that if a person of one of the nationalities listed makes a reservation, that it will be honored by the hotel.

On “the other side” of the Chao Phraya River, a short boat ride away you will find the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort. While it is located only 10 or 15 minutes from the heart of Bangkok, it feels like it is a world away with a true resort feeling.

Getting there

The resort operates two complimentary shuttle boats between the Saphan Taksin Skytrain station and the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort. These leave every 20 minutes and the ride takes between ten and fifteen minutes. Look for the Anantara logo on the roof and either a Benihana or Trader Vic’s logo on top of the boat.

There was no need to prove that we are staying at the hotel to make use of the complimentary boat, which also makes it a good choice if you are just going to eat at one of the ten dining establishments at the resort.

Actually, many times, while staying at other hotels in Bangkok, we have taken this boat to this hotel just so we could enjoy the fantastic buffet dinner at the Riverside Terrace. Even now, we often take friends who are visiting Bangkok for the first time to eat here. The combination of the soft river breeze, the traditional Thai music being played live in the garden and the delicious aromas from the Thai BBQ buffet make for a dreamlike experience.

While the free ferry boat service is fun and convenient, I would recommend taking a taxi the first time you go with your luggage, as taxis are still very cheap in Thailand, and it might be a bit much to haul your luggage on and off the boat.

The hotel is designed with traditional Thai architecture in mind and makes use of a lot of wood and wood paneling. The Anantara touch, which has gained a reputation for showcasing indigenous cultural experiences in some of the world’s most exotic locations is everywhere and the service is excellent.

Pool

The pool is large and surrounded by palm trees and other tropical plants providing lots of natural shade and a real cool resort vibe. It’s very easy to forget that you could be shopping in the heart of Bangkok in 15 minutes from where you are.

While the pool is quite large and there are lots of sun lounges around, unfortunately a lot of guests from a certain region in the world think it is ok to get up at dawn, throw a couple of towels and a book on a few sundecks and this “reserves” the area for their use until they stroll back down at lunchtime or some other time throughout the day.

If you are unable to find a place to sit by the pool but see that there are a large number of unattended sun lounges being “held” for future use, just ask one of the pool attendants and they will sort you out. If you get yelled at by an angry European later (as we were), just refer them to the staff.

Rooms

All rooms are of course comfortable and well equipped. In each room there were fresh tropical fruits and flowers which are refreshed throughout the stay. The staff go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable, and in fact, when they found out that we were there on our honeymoon, we came back to our room one afternoon to discover a cake decorated with our names and wishing us a happy honeymoon!

Restaurants

There are ten restaurants and bars at the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort including a Benihanas and a number of outdoor establishments situated by the river.

You can sit and have cocktails in the cooling breeze or a full meal at riverside or even on the pier if you like, while listening to traditional Thai music being softly played live right there in the garden. It is actually one of the most romantic settings for dinner that I have experienced in Bangkok. From time to time you may even see some traditional Thai dancers perform nearby. (Yes I know I mentioned dinner at the Riverside Terrace twice, it really is that good!)

Overall we had a fantastic time at the resort. The rooms and facilities were beautiful and the location was great, far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok to be really relaxing, but still very close if you want to nick into town for some shopping or nightlife.

Condé Nast Traveler has just released their annual Gold List for 2012 listing the 511 top rated hotels, resorts and cruise lines in the world, as voted for by their well-traveled readership.

After over eight million votes through their readers choice survey, eleven hotels throughout Thailand- six in Bangkok, two each in Chiang Mai and Phuket and one in Chiang Rai have come out amongst the best in the world.

Readers were asked to rate hotels on six aspects; rooms, service, food, location, design and activities. Each property is awarded an overall score as well as each category being scored separately.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok

A perennial favorite among tourists, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok scored the highest of all hotels in Thailand, achieving an overall 97.9 points. Broken down by category as follows:

• Service- 98.7
• Food- 97.4
• Location- 97.4
• Design- 98

Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi

Good news for the Mandarin Group as they snag the two highest rated hotels in Thailand this year. The Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi in Chiang Mai garnered some attention last year when it hosted an episode of the American ABC reality show The Bachelorette, and scored an overall 95.7 points on the Gold List this year.

Grand Hyatt Erawan

I’m glad to see one of my all-time favorite hotels, the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok on this list. With a fantastic location, great rooms and always a cool, busy atmosphere in the public spaces, this is always the first hotel I stay in whenever I am in Bangkok. The Erawan scored an overall 88 on the list this year.

The Sukhothai

The Sukhothai on Sathorn is another well established Bangkok hotel that has made a solid appearance on this list for more than five years running. An overall score of 87.8.

While I am happy to see some personal favorites, such as the Grand Hyatt Erawan and the Chiang Mai Four Seasons, I am a little surprised that some of the newer properties such as Siam Kempinski and Hansar didn’t get a mention. These two hotels are both quite new and are probably still under most people’s radar (though the Hansar is consistently fully booked), but I think that they can certainly offer a serious alternative to some of the hotels on this list, especially the aging Peninsula and Oriental.

Located on the roof of the Lebua at State Tower, this is one of the premier locations for high end New Year celebrations.
