5 Fantastic Bangkok hotels you probably haven’t heard of, yet.

…..Unless you read this blog regularly

Siam Kempinski

Nestled in behind the upscale Siam Paragon in the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district, Siam Kempinski is the first property in Thailand of the European Kempinski chain of luxury hotels.

The Kempinski is an oasis in the center of Bangkok with a number of meandering saltwater pools surrounded by gardens of tropical plants, palms and lush grass. The guestrooms are beautifully furnished and the public spaces as well as the guestrooms are decorated with over 1500 pieces of artwork, many of them by local artists.

Food is also covered with several restaurants serving delicious food including local Thai delicacies at the Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin restaurant, where Danish chef Hanrik Yde-Andersen shows why he earned a Michelin star for his Thai cooking in Copenhagen

Hansar Bangkok

Hansar Bangkok is my new favorite hotel in Bangkok, and you may have noticed on this blog that I cannot stop singing the praises of this new 5 star property. (See my Hansar Bangkok review here)

What’s so good about it? Where to start? The rooms are large, beautifully furnished with a harmonious blend of wood, stone, the thickest carpets I have ever seen and a truly unique implementation of indoor plants that will have you stepping back in amazement the second you walk in the room.

Then there is the free wifi, the free mini bar with soft-drinks, beer and snacks that is replenished daily at no charge, the iPhone/iPod/iPad/Blackberry chargers by the bed, the list goes on.

This is the one hotel that I would recommend to anyone looking for an extraordinary stay in Bangkok.

Silver water cup for pouring water during Songkran festival

(Plus 9 more Bangkok 5 Stars under USD 100)

The world famous Songkran Festival
is now less than a month away. While many people head to Chiang Mai for the raucous water festival, often dubbed The World’s Biggest Water Fight, Bangkok also has a lot of fun, with the area around Kaosan Road being the best-known. If you want to stay in the thick of the action, one of the hotels near Wat Pho
will put you there.

However, as someone who has experienced the non-stop mayhem that Songkran festival celebrations turn out to be, let me tell you, you will probably appreciate a nice hotel a little removed from the battle ground, where you won’t get drenched as soon as you walk out of the hotel doors.

3 Stunning Temples of Bangkok

Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya River

The Temples of Bangkok

With so many beautiful temples in Bangkok it’s easy to get blasé about them – “oh look, it’s another temple!” Don’t let this happen to you as it would be a shame to miss out on some of Bangkok’s best temples. By choosing a few of the best you can make sure you don’t get ‘templed out’; hopefully this brief guide to Bangkok’s top three temples will help.

Wat Phra Kaew – the Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Wat Phra Kaew, which in English means the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is definitely one temple you should not miss. This is considered to be the most sacred Buddhist temple in the whole of Thailand and is located within the grounds of the Grand Palace. Construction of this stunning temple began in 1785 when King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke moved the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok and wanted a personal place of worship.

As the English name for this temple suggests, Wat Phra Kaew is home to the Emerald Buddha which is housed within the central ‘ubosoth’, but all around the temple buildings there are magnificent and intricate carvings and statues to see. The model of Angkor Wat is particularly impressive.

Wat Arun – Temple of the Dawn

Wat Arun can be seen from quite some distance away as the most striking feature of this temple is its tall tower. The central ‘prang’ (Khmer-style tower) rises up to a height of 85 meters (279 feet) and is complemented by four smaller prangs. The seashells and porcelain that decorate the prangs are what give Wat Arun the name ‘Temple of the Dawn’ as at dawn the first light reflects off these, giving a beautiful pearly iridescence. Some would argue then that dawn is the best time to visit this Bangkok temple!

Wat Pho – the Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Situated behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the grounds of the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This is one of the largest and oldest wats in Bangkok and is of course home to the Reclining Buddha, plus over 1,000 Buddha images. The Reclining Buddha itself is a massive 46 meters long by 15 meters high and is decorated with gold plating and mother of pearl.

Have you visited any, or all of these temples? What are some other “wats” that you would recommend for visitors to Bangkok?

Five star Bangkok hotels in December 2010

Bangkok is famous for it’s cheap hotels, even its magnificent, ever-growing collection of luxurious five star hotels.

With peak season fast approaching I decided to see how many 5 star hotels in Bangkok I could find on Agoda.com that were going for less than USD 100 per night in December. I came up with 13.

While a number of them may be new to you, there are still some pretty well-known 5 star hotels offering rooms at less than a hundred U.S. dollars, including The Dusit Thani, Centara Grand and two Swissôtel properties.
