Next in the ongoing series of hotels near Bangkok attractions, are hotels near Siam Paragon, in the Siam district of Bangkok.

Siam Paragon is one of the newest, largest and most well renowned shopping malls in Thailand, if not all of Southeast Asia. Opened in December 2005, this huge shopping complex boasts 400, 000 square meters of retail space and houses over 250 retail stores and services.

Siam Paragon

Apart from shopping at some of the many upscale brand stores here, there is plenty of things to do if you wanted to spend a day indoors away from the Bangkok heat. You will  find the 21 screen Paragon Cineplex complex and Krungsri IMAX theatre, as well as Siam Discovery center. In the basement, covering 10,000 square meters is Siam Ocean World, the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia, with 30,000 marine animals comprising of 400 species.

Siam Paragon is easily accessible by public transportation from almost anywhere in Bangkok thanks to the BTS Skytrain. Siam Station, which is at a junction between the Sukhumvit line and the Silom line is connected to the M floor by a covered elevated skybridge. You can travel by foot along the skybridge as far as the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, with the famous Erawan Shrine on the corner and the Intercontinental Hotel across the street.

The Skybridge will also take you to the second largest mall in Asia, Central World, which features a huge range of stores and the Centara Grand at Central World.
Central World was damaged in an arson attack in May 2010. The Siam Theatre was totally destroyed. It is unclear at this moment how much of the mall was damaged and when it will open again. Leave a message below and check back for updates.

Hotels near Patpong

Almost everybody who visits Bangkok Thailand checks out Patpong at least once. Love it or hate it, Patpong is one of the best known and night spots in Bangkok.

There are two main activities on offer in Patpong. The first one is the night market that is set up in the street from about 6pm until late at night. Here you can find anything that you would expect to find in a market catering to tourists in Thailand, and not a single thing here is real. Knockoffs of just about anything are available here from cheap(ish) Diesel jeans and shoes, heaps of T-shirts, watches, CDs, DVDs, handbags and belts.

Child Muay Thai boxers

A 9 year old girl takes a break between rounds of muay thai boxing

Seeing this news story on a 7 year old girl who is a champion Muay Thai boxer reminded me of the night I watched a match between a 9 year boy and 9 year girl.

You can read my account of the night I went and watched some child Muay Thai boxers in Hua Hin at the Grand Sport Hua Hin on Petchkasem Road. This is a good night of entertainment if you are staying in Hua Hin, or even if you are living it up in one of the hotels in Cha Am, the next beach resort town on the way to Bangkok.

Do you think this is exploitation? Or do you think it is a good opportunity for kids with the talent and parents with drive to help them out of poverty? Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.
