Best Bangkok NYE fireworks views

All the photos on this page were taken on New Years Eve last year from the Lebua at State Tower Hotel, which was featured in The Hangover 2. I also used one of these photos for my December 2011 desktop calendar wallpaper.

While the views from the balconies of the Lebua Club rooms in the 63 story hotel are spectacular, Lebua isn’t the only Bangkok hotel which offers fantastic views of the NYE fireworks display over the Chao Phraya River.

Bangkok has plenty of riverside hotels (a full list of Bangkok riverside hotels can be found here), however not all of them are in an optimal position to view the fireworks display.

While the Lebua is not literally on the waterfront, but a block or two back, the height and the large open air balconies offer truly spectacular views of the whole river as well as the revelers in the surrounding areas. This hotel would be one of my top recommendations for New Years Eve.

Other popular hotels right on the river include The Shangri-La, The Penninsula Bangkok, and the Mandarin Oriental.

A little further up the river is the Millennium Hilton Bangkok Hotel. If you are going to stay here on New Years Eve I would recommend reserving one of the Executive Plus Suites, as these are located at the front of the hotel overlooking the river. While regular rooms on the downriver side of the hotel will also have great views of the fireworks, if you get a room on the opposite side of the hotel, facing upstream, you won’t be able to see anything.

Another great hotel from which to view the fireworks in Bangkok on New Years Eve is the lesser known Chatrium Suites. The spacious rooms here, like the Lebua at State Tower, feature large open balconies from which you can view the fireworks. In fact, I think the balconies here are better as the balcony guard rail is lower and made of glass, as opposed to the Lebua, which has tall concrete balustrades, which can make it a little difficult for children, or people in a wheelchair to see down to the river.

5 Chiang Mai Five Star Hotels from December 19th, for less than USD 212.

(including 4 for less than 134 dollars per night!)

Concluding the series of posts that have run every Monday since the middle of October, today I am highlighting 5 beautiful five star hotels in the stunning northern capital of Chiang Mai.

These hotels can be had for less than 212 US dollars in the middle of the peak season, with four of them available for USD150 and less. These rates are for five nights from December 19th.

I chose to focus on this date as it is one of the busiest for arrivals in Thailand during the Christmas/New Year vacation period.

Many of the hotels listed below offer free wifi to guests, and these properties are indicated by the mark.

• Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa Chiang Mai From USD 212.
• Dusit D2 Chiang Mai Hotel From USD 105.
• Shangri-La Chiang Mai From USD 134.
• Rati Lanna Riverside Spa Resort From USD 127.
• Rachamankha Hotel From USD 150.

The Dusit D2 and the Shangri-La are located close to the famous night bazaar, while the Rachamankha is situated in the Old City area of Chiang Mai.

While there are less hotels listed here in Chiang Mai than in other areas listed in this series, there is no dearth of spectacularly luxurious 5 star properties in the northern capital. Standouts include the perennial favorite, the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, Azaya Villas Resort, and the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi Hotel, which was recently featured in a round of the TV reality series, The Bachelorette.

Getting here is easy as there is direct flights to and from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Seoul and Laos. Domestically, plenty of airlines service the airport from Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui and other regional areas through budget airlines Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia and One-Two-Go

Lebua at State Tower Bangkok

Lebua at State Tower plays a prominent role in The Hangover Part II -showcasing the open air bar on the roof of a skyscraper hotel as seen from a helicopter. The wedding scenes at the beginning of The Hangover 2 were filmed at Phulay Bay, A Ritz Carlton Reserve, the flagship property of the new Reserve brand of the Ritz Carlton, focusing on smaller, boutique properties in remote of rural areas. It is truly a stunning property.

The resort is located on the coast of the Andaman Sea 40 minutes from Krabi International Airport and 2 hours from Phuket International Airport.

Among the facilities included are an infinity pool, destination spa, fitness center, shopping, cooking classes and Thai Batik painting. The luxurious villas feature rainforest showers, indoor and outdoor baths, spacious walk-in wardrobes and verandas with lounge beds. Each room is assigned a personal butler, whose services are at guests’ disposal 24 hours a day.

Rates start at just under USD700* for the Resort Pavilion on the Ritz Carlton website, while they can be had for USD495* on Agoda. *Rates quoted are for the end of June 2011.

Tour of the Caroline Astor Suite

You may remember the sneak peek of the St Regis Bangkok I posted here a couple of months ago. Well now I am pleased to bring you a little video tour of the Caroline Astor Suite which offers arguably the best views in all of Bangkok.

Located across the street from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, on the 16th to 24th floors, the St Regis created a buzz when they opened the doors to Thailand’s first St Regis property in April.

Check out this video I made of the Caroline Astor Suite at the St Regis Bangkok a week before they opened in April. Imagine waking up to views like this!

As you can see in the video, the bathroom has floor to ceiling windows which look out over the Bangkok Royal Sports Club below. Yod, my butler, assured me that of course the glass in the windows, and the view , were one way and that guests could feel comfortable watching the races from their free-standing bathtub.

There are of course full length.blinds for those who do not feel completely comfortable being naked in front of the Bangkok high society below.

Siam Kempinski

Nestled in behind the upscale Siam Paragon in the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district, Siam Kempinski is the first property in Thailand of the European Kempinski chain of luxury hotels.

The Kempinski is an oasis in the center of Bangkok with a number of meandering saltwater pools surrounded by gardens of tropical plants, palms and lush grass. The guestrooms are beautifully furnished and the public spaces as well as the guestrooms are decorated with over 1500 pieces of artwork, many of them by local artists.

Food is also covered with several restaurants serving delicious food including local Thai delicacies at the Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin restaurant, where Danish chef Hanrik Yde-Andersen shows why he earned a Michelin star for his Thai cooking in Copenhagen

Hansar Bangkok

Hansar Bangkok is my new favorite hotel in Bangkok, and you may have noticed on this blog that I cannot stop singing the praises of this new 5 star property. (See my Hansar Bangkok review here)

What’s so good about it? Where to start? The rooms are large, beautifully furnished with a harmonious blend of wood, stone, the thickest carpets I have ever seen and a truly unique implementation of indoor plants that will have you stepping back in amazement the second you walk in the room.

Then there is the free wifi, the free mini bar with soft-drinks, beer and snacks that is replenished daily at no charge, the iPhone/iPod/iPad/Blackberry chargers by the bed, the list goes on.

This is the one hotel that I would recommend to anyone looking for an extraordinary stay in Bangkok.

Praya Palazzo

The only way to access the 17 room mansion Praya Palazzo is by traditional wooden barge on the Chao Praya River.  Dating back to the ancient kingdom of Siam, the mansion is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, one of the most significant rivers in Thailand. The Praya Palazzo is the only historical residence of its kind, with a history dating back to 1923.

The charming rooms offer something truly unique for guests looking for something different than the usual 5 star fare.

Its position in the oldest part of Bangkok, places it within walking distance of many interesting historical sites such as The Grand Palace, The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Aroon (The Temple of Dawn), China Town and The National Museum.

Tenface

Space and style are on offer at Tenface, a quiet contender that has been pleasantly and consistently surprising guests, and diners, since it opened in the Wireless district in 2008.

All rooms are suites and the smallest is the one bedroom suite at 61 square meters, with sizes increasing up to the Tenface Suite at 142 square meters.

Anantara Bangkok Sathorn Hotel

You probably haven’t heard of the Anantara Bangkok Sathorn Hotel because it changed hands last year and was formerly known as the Sathorn Heritage Hotel & Residences.

The rooms are beautifully furnished and roomy, with a choice of Deluxe rooms or two bedroom suites. Enjoy the 32 meter swimming pool, free wifi and delicious food at the three international standard dining establishments, including wood-fired pizza at Crust.

St Regis is famed for its signature butler service, and apart from the car ride from the airport if you so chose, your personal butler will be your first, and last, point of contact during your stay.

Your butler will be waiting for you on the ground floor and will take you and your baggage up to the 12th floor to check you in. Don’t be surprised if your butler anticipates your needs before you have an opportunity to express them, as they are exceptionally well trained at the original St Regis property in New York and are very attentive and perceptive.

As I was there before the hotel officially opened and the ground floor was yet to be completed, Yod, my butler, met me at the foot of the stairs at Ratchadamri BTS Skytrain station. Immaculately dressed and perfectly mannered, he looked exactly how you would expect a butler to look; three-piece suit, cuff links, white gloves and shirt, silver necktie.

Yod took great pride in his work and assured me that all the other butlers at the St Regis did as well. I asked him what makes a great butler and he told me it was a hunger for knowledge.

“I’m always watching to see what guests are interested in and then I try to find out as much as I can about those things so I can answer any questions a guest may have.”

Try as I might, I couldn’t stump him on any question that I could come up with, whether it was the thread count in the sheets (320 count Egyptian cotton), where the signature Remède toiletries -which are made specially for St Regis- were made (Spain), or the name of the bartender who invented what has become known as the Bloody Mary, at the King Cole Bar in St Regis New York in 1934, (Fernand Petiot).

Butlers at the St Regis Bangkok do a lot more than simply greet you and carry your bags to your room. Whether it is unpacking your luggage for you or whipping up just about any food order you can concoct, with one assigned to each floor they are always at your beck and call.

Guests also have a choice of butlers if they so choose. Apart from butlers fluent in English and Thai, St Regis offers butlers who are proficient in Japanese and Mandarin, with Spanish and French speaking butlers currently undergoing training to be deployed soon.

Guests can also choose to have a female butler if the idea of a male butler packing and unpacking their suitcases make them a little uncomfortable.

The introduction to Bangkok of the butler service at the St Regis is an exciting addition to the Bangkok luxury hotel market and certainly raises the bar for high end properties.

It is directly on the beach front and the resort is set among lush Feng Shui gardens.   Twenty two rooms have king-sized beds as well a day beds on the verandas overlooking the Gulf – perfect for catching the spectacular Cha Am sunrises.  The resort also has a free form swimming pool with artificial beach, sand, bubble jets, slide and many activities available right on the property.

Aleenta Cha Am

Perfect for the person looking for a hideaway.

They have pool suite bungalows with private plunge pools, and ocean view suites that have indoor and outdoor living areas.  Whether you’re with a family or are looking for an adults only getaway, the Aleenta Cha Am has what you need.  There is the child-friendly Frangipani Wing, and then a larger adults only area.  All accommodations include an iPod dock so you can listen to your own music, but also have an iPod in the room pre-loaded with a large selection of music.  They pride themselves on the luxury of the linens with Egyptian cotton sheets and big, fluffy luxury bath towels.  The resort also offers complimentary wireless internet.
