Two Marriott hotels are heavily discounted this week, The JW Marriott on Sukhumvit, and the Courtyard by Marriott off Rajadamri near the Bangkok Royal Sports Club and Lumpini Park. While 42% off the JW, with rates down to USD134 is certainly a discount, The Courtyard is, in my opinion, a way better deal.

At less than half the price at USD67 per night, with the same high quality Marriott standards and furnishings, combined with more spacious rooms and a sunnier pool, I would definitely recommend the Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok. I stayed there earlier this year and it was great.

5 Chiang Mai Five Star Hotels from December 19th, for less than USD 212.

Concluding the series of posts that have run every Monday since the middle of October, today I am highlighting 5 beautiful five star hotels in the stunning northern capital of Chiang Mai.

These hotels can be had for less than 212 US dollars in the middle of the peak season, with four of them available for USD150 and less. These rates are for five nights from December 19th.

I chose to focus on this date as it is one of the busiest for arrivals in Thailand during the Christmas/New Year vacation period.

Many of the hotels listed below offer free wifi to guests, and these properties are indicated by the mark.

• Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa Chiang Mai From USD 212.
• Dusit D2 Chiang Mai Hotel From USD 105.
• Shangri-La Chiang Mai From USD 134.
• Rati Lanna Riverside Spa Resort From USD 127.
• Rachamankha Hotel From USD 150.

The Dusit D2 and the Shangri-La are located close to the famous night bazaar, while the Rachamankha is situated in the Old City area of Chiang Mai.

While there are less hotels listed here in Chiang Mai than in other areas listed in this series, there is no dearth of spectacularly luxurious 5 star properties in the northern capital. Standouts include the perennial favorite, the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, Azaya Villas Resort, and the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi Hotel, which was recently featured in a round of the TV reality series, The Bachelorette.

Getting here is easy as there is direct flights to and from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Seoul and Laos. Domestically, plenty of airlines service the airport from Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui and other regional areas through budget airlines Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia and One-Two-Go

With some parts of Bangkok partially submerged due to flood waters heading towards the ocean from Northern Thailand, combined with misleading or just incorrect information being reported in the international media, many hotels in Bangkok are taking measures to secure as many reservations in the future as possible.

This is good news for travelers because many hotels are offering large (larger than usual) discounts on reservations made up to 21 days in advance. With flood waters expected to be gone within a month, this is an excellent opportunity to grab some great deals.

Continuing the series of posts that will run every Monday through till the end of November, today I am highlighting 16 Five Star Resorts and Hotels on Ko Samui, one of Thailand’s more beutiful, and so far relativley untarnished islands.

These hotels and resorts can be had for less than 299 US dollars in the middle of the peak season, for five nights from December 27th.

I chose to focus on this date as it is one of the busiest for arrivals in Thailand during the Christmas/New Year vacation period.

I also found two new five star resorts on Ko Samui for less than 100 dollars a night during the same period, however I hesitated to include them in the list above for a couple of reasons.

First is that they are newly listed and I haven’t had a chance to check them out, but more importantly, the ridiculously low prices (82 and 71 dollars per night), lead me to suspect that they may just possibly be playing a little loose and liberal with the star rating. While the floods in Thailand continue to make international news, most areas of interest to tourists in Bangkok are largely unaffected by the floodwaters. Richard Barrow (Twitter @RichardBarrow) has an excellent blog with daily updates on the situation around Bangkok. You can also see his many photos of various areas of the capital showing the real extent of the floods here.

It’s important to remember that most tourist areas of Thailand including Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi, Ko Samui and almost all others are not affected by the floods, and the the water in Bangkok is expected to subside within a month.
